The 2011 Geauga County Maple Festival
is dedicated to long time Board Member
and Official Festival Photographer

volunteering almost 40 years ....

PAUL A. NEWMAN

We dedicate the 2011 Geauga County Maple Festival in honor of Paul A. Newman and his almost 40 years of dedication and service to the Festival and the Festival Board.  THANK YOU, Paul !  We love you !!

Dedication Comments

presented by Michelle Piscopo & Sara Brougher - Piscopo begins:

What can we say about PAUL A. NEWMAN that has not already been said by someone from one of his many other public affiliations?

When I called Paul to tell him the 2011 Geauga County Maple Festival is being dedicated to him for all his hard work and service over the years, he was thrilled!!!!  No, actually, he just laughed.

I asked him to send me a bio…… "nothing extravagant”, I told him, “just something we can work from to describe you and your activities over the years.”  The next day, I rec’d an e-mail from Paul …with a 6 page resume attached!

We wanted to speak about everything Paul has accomplished so far but if we did that, we would be here until Rosie starts Karaoke so we will just focus on his involvement & contributions to the Maple Festival.

Paul joined the Maple Festival Board in 1979.  He has been our legal council throughout the years making sure we stay within the legal limits.

Paul was President of the Festival Board in 1992, 1996, and 1997.

Due to his passion for photography, he is our official Festival photographer. Paul has been taking pictures at the Geauga County Maple Festival for decades and the festival office has a few dozen photo albums filled with thousands of pictures from years gone by.

Every year you will see him perched at the NE Corner of Chardon Square during the Grand Parades taking photos of each parade entry.   Paul has also been a judge of the Maple Festival Photo Contest since 1997.

And a few years ago, Cleveland’s Fox 8 News came out to the Festival for a Chardon Iron Chef Competition for the Kickin’ it with Kenny segment.  Paul and I were on a team with the head chef of Sebastian’s restaurant and we were up against a team from the Chardon Chamber of Commerce. We ended up taking 2nd place, but we had great time being on television slathering maple syrup on our salmon entrée, side dish, and presenting the judges with Paul’s famous PanApple dessert.

 SARA BROUGHER continues ...

Paul was the brain behind the ‘Pancake Rollups’ initiative over 10 years ago. For those of you who know Paul, he is a great delegator.  Yes, he started to organize the roll-up event but then about 2 days before festival weekend, Paul passed the duties to an unsuspecting festival volunteer and then flew off to Vietnam for one of his many exotic trips. Unfortunately, the Pancake Rollups did not make it, but that was the stimulus that brought about our current “Pancakes in the Park” which is attended by thousands of people year after year.

Paul  also dabbled in our souvenir booth a few years back.  If a question came up about the souvenirs, Paul would reply, ‘Oh…my secretary is handling that…I’ll get back to you.’ …..Delegator!

We are so fortunate to have a Paul in our organization.  His knowledge, his talents, and most importantly his humor, has certainly driven this festival to new levels.  We are so proud of all his accomplishments and know there are still many years of his involvement which will allow the festival to thrive.

A special thank you to his beautiful wife of 36 years, Merrilou, for sharing Paul with us over the years.

Due to the fact that our time is limited, we do have printouts of Paul’s many accomplishments for anyone who would like to see them.  Or just ask him, and I’m sure he will e-mail it to you!!!  They are just too amazing not to share with you all!
